Photographing The Seasons: Snow on Phlox

The month of March can really bring some interesting contrasts, a winter that doesn't want to leave with a spring that isn't going to wait or early blooms of the daffodils which get covered by a snowstorm.

"Snow on Phlox" was created when a light snow fell after the spring Phlox began blooming.  As a gardener, I was concerned there wouldn't be many blooms that spring, but it turned out to be a beautiful season.

Sunday's Thought

Used by Permission, ChristianQuotes

I saw this quote on ChristianQuotes and had to share it with you- it speaks volumes of truth in a simple sentence.

Over the past 8 years or so, my wife and I took care of our parents.  At one point, it was at the same time-  talk about stress!  One evening when my wife's father became ill and needed to stay with us, I heard God's voice as audibly as if someone was standing there with me.  He said, "be patient, keep your eyes open, pay attention," as I wondered how we were going to care for three parents,

As we took the road before us, we went through struggles, rough times, and frustrations- we often went in opposite directions to do what we needed to do.

God's Presence and Love was with us through all these struggles -many times it was through our church family and friends who helped through kind deeds, hugs, cards- God helped us to "fly over" the times we thought- "will we get through it- ? "

At 6:45 p.m. today, the Vernal equinox occurs making it official- it's Spring.  As a warm weather-lover, this is one of my favorite times of the year- warmer weather ahead.

The beauty of the trees in the winter often creates an art that is missed as you walk or drive by.

Sunday's Thought

Coincidence or God's Love?

My vote in these discussions is God's Love. I used to believe in coincidences and "OH, WOW" moments and "Can't believe this happened" type of thing, then really not thinking much more about it.

As I've grown as a Christian over the years, I've learned that there is no such thing as a coincidence.  It's God's Love for me, caring for me.  He's watching out for me and my well-being- whatever the outcome.

After all, in the Bible, Scripture repeatedly says:

"But you, O God my Lord,
deal on my behalf for your name's sake;
because your steadfast love is good, deliver me!"
- Psalm 109:21 , ESV

For God so loved the world,
that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him
should not perish but have eternal life."
-John 3:16 ESV

"And we know that for those who love God
all things work together for good,
for those who are called according to his purpose."
- Romans 8:28

"What then shall we say to these things?
If God is for us, who can be against us?"
- Romans 8:31 ESV

I have learned, these are God Moments- times He's watching out for me and I get the blessing of seeing it happen.

Photographing The Seasons: Fog at Great Falls

Great Falls National Park, Great Falls, Virginia is an exciting place to photograph.  Each day seems to bring a new view to the Potomac River rushing over the rocks and ridges.

On this morning, I was disappointed to find a heavy fog after traveling to the park in beautiful weather. Since I was already there, I went to the falls and was fortunate to photograph some beautiful scenes of the river and fog.

Big Rocky Run is a creek that runs through Fairfax County with origins from ponds in the Fairfax area.  A favorite place to photograph for me and many others due to its changing nature.

Several trails follow the creek from Walney Nature Center to near Fairfax.

Sunday's Thought

"Jesus, Hold My Hand-" is the name of a song I heard while attending a concert of the Gaither Homecoming Friends several years ago.  I still go to the concerts and hear this song occasionally. When it comes up on one of the CD's I'm playing, it's always one to crank up!

An excerpt of the song-

Jesus Hold My Hand
by George Jones

This would be my prayer dear Lord each day
To help me do the best I can
For I need Thy light to guide me day and night
Blessed Jesus hold my hand.

Jesus hold my hand
I need thee every hour
Through this pilgrim land
Protect me by thy power.

Funny how God works through music and His Word.  You never know when something you've heard will be something that helps you down the road.

My wife had gone out of town on business and I planned a week of fun around the house with my dog Noah.  I enjoy the time she travels, though I always miss her quite a bit, as it gives me time to do stuff without worrying about anyone else- but Noah. The week went well, for the most part.

It was a cold March day when I received the call from the hospital that my father had fallen.  They asked for me to come out to be with him.  Not knowing his circumstance and already having plans to meet him for doctors appointment, I told the nurse I would be out there as soon as I could as I had to finish up something at work that I could not just stop.  She seemed a bit surprised and that should have been a clue to me- but I really didn't have much choice.

Lucky for me, the nurse did not tell me everything when she called.  If she had, I may have driven like a mad man (which is unlike me) and gotten ridiculously stressed out trying to get to the hospital.

When I got to the hospital, I found my father in the Emergency Room.  He looked like he'd been beaten up by someone three times his size.  A lady friend was sitting with him until I arrived.  She left once I came in, but I wished she'd stayed a few minutes as I was not prepared for what I saw.

I did pretty well, until I saw his eye swollen really bad.  It quickly became apparent that it was time for me to sit down so if I passed out, I wouldn't have far to fall.  All that was needed now, was for me to do just that.  I'm not generally squeemish, but eye injuries or ones in that area will do it to me.

Before I could pass out, I prayed "Jesus help me through this.  I am the only one who can be here for Dad. Please "hold my hand" and get me through."

Soon after my prayer, I felt God's comfort come over me and a strength to help me get through.

As I sat with Dad in the hospital, I began to relax and realize that God had placed strength for me to help Dad. It was exactly what I needed as the nurse and doctor came to tell me he was being transferred to a head trauma unit at another hospital.

I followed the ambulance to our destination praying most of the way and wondering what would be next for Dad.  As I arrived at the hospital, the valet took my car and I went to meet with Dad in the emergency room.

The day ended with Dad being admitted to the hospital and observed for at least a few days.  I had to head home so I could get some rest and dinner.

I look back at the day and remember how God was there with me when I felt so alone and worried for my father.  He was a Presence that I will never forget.

Photographing The Seasons: Frozen Walney Pond

"Frozen Walney Pond"

Why photograph a pond?  Well, why not?  The beauty of nature is found everywhere you look and sometimes, the same thing you see today will look different later.

When I came upon the pond, the intricacies of the frozen water with the shadows of the tree branches got my attention.  Simply beautiful.

Sunday's Thought

As a member of "Faithful Bloggers," I was challenged to select a word to make as my New Years Resolution and write a blog post about it. I decided on the word "Follow."

Though a bit late to make "New Year's Resolutions," it's never too late to change something or incorporate something new in your life.

Why the word "Follow?"  For me, I have quite a few changes coming in 2015. And, I am excited about all of them. Mostly. I have to admit, part of me is wondering if I really want to do all of this.
Used by Permission, GraphicStock

Last year, in early fall, it became evident to my wife and I that we were being called by God to serve a certain purpose at our church.

Let me back up a bit, a few years ago when we changed churches, we did so because we knew God was calling us to do it.  So, we followed what He said for us to do.  Though I wasn't too happy with it and I had to keep reminding myself of God's calling, I went through the doors which He was opening. Nothing slammed, so I figured I was on the path He set ahead.  Why? At the time I didn't know.  After some time has passed,  it's become increasingly evident. His Purpose is being fulfilled.

So, for 2015, I choose the word "Follow."  I will "Follow" Him.  I will "Follow" His desires, wants or call on my life.  Not because I'm special, or deserving, because I'm not. But, I believe to NOT "Follow" could harm someone else from seeing eternity, from not finding Christ, from not having an extremely, wonderfully, great Christian life that is beyond comprehension- until you "Follow" Him.

I will "Follow."  What about you?
